SHE’S SO MODERN-IST

Illuminations asked me to collaborate with them on this feature length documentary Coventry Cathedral: Building for a New Britain. The film examines and explores the recorded history, development and legacy of rebuilding the cathedral after it was almost destroyed during the Blitz of 1942.

As graphic designer, the challenge was to create a style that drew upon 20th Century modernist design and add a contemporary flavour. Established in a short animated title sequence, this approach would then feature throughout the film including several chapter headings and captions.

Drawing upon shapes and patterns evident in the architecture, these geometric building blocks are set out on a grid system and animated in a stop frame style to fragment and rebuild images and text.

Alongside the graphics, I also designed and created a vast library of textures and split screen layouts, all based on the same grid system, and often including the same geometric designs, to complement and often in repsonse to the archive material.
